In training: Oliver Proudlock is running the London marathon for the British Heart Foundation
So you think all gyms are pretty much the same right? White walls, harsh strip lights and the aroma of stale sweat. Well, not with the new 1 Rebel gym in the city – this is more like working out in a high-end nightclub. Subdued lighting, stripped down and industrial Shoreditch-style interiors, exposed brick and copper piping - if it wasn’t for the rows of the latest high-tech treadmills, work-out benches, and indoor cycling machines I would have thought we had come to the wrong place - for a work-out anyway.
Welcome to #PROUDFITNESS. I’m trying out some of London’s hottest gyms to see why people can’t get enough, speaking to the head trainers and experiencing their classes and giving you the low-down.
Where: For my second instalment of #PROUDFITNESS, I headed to Chelsea to try out KOBOX, a boutique boxing studio that offers high intensity classes in a bespoke studio setting.
Which class? Its class combines heavy bag boxing routines with functional strength training in a ‘Fight Club meets nightclub’ environment.
Welcome to the first instalment of #PROUDFITNESS. Over the next 6 months I’m going to be visiting some of London hottest gyms to find out why people can’t get enough. I’ll be speaking to the head trainers, as well as trying out the classes myself.
Where: I headed to High Street Kensington to check out the recently-opened Core Collective. It offers a number of different classes all of which you can attend on a pay-as-you-go basis Whether it be Weighted Yoga, Spin or their signature class Velocity, you will be sure to feel the burn in its stylish, contemporary environment.
I have been a huge fan of the original 1 Rebel gym in St Mary Axe since I first experienced their Rebel Reshape class back in January this year - a combination of high intensity cardio, on the super high tech running machines, combined with bench work. As soon as I heard they were launching their second studio in Broadgate Circle, I couldn’t wait to check it out. This site offers the Rebel Reshape, as well as their new boxing concept coined ‘Rumble’.
After months of training hard for the London Marathon, the day itself finally came. A few days before, I’d discovered I needed a root canal, so timing was far from perfect. The doctors dosed me up on pain killers and said it would have to wait until after the marathon. After months of training and managing to avoid any sort of running injury, it was just my luck to endure tooth ache and a lack of sleep before race day.
