Daily Routine of Patients

09/05/10

Having photographed various archives, on St. Mary's Mental Asylum, in Newcastle's Discovery Museum. I then decided to try and re-create the original documents, with a plan to potentially exhibit them alongside my paintings. This would in turn not only contextualize my paintings but add an overall sense of authenticity and interest into my subject. As a result, by exhibiting the two together, the viewer not only becomes a guest in the past but also the present.

This rediscovery of St Mary's history, through my regular visits to the Discovery Museum, has become a strong part within my project. It has strongly influenced my paintings, and has helped me become more and more attached to my subject.

The photo below is one of these prints, a section from the daily routine of the patients. I re-wrote the specific texts, then photo etched them onto a copper plate's and printed them onto authentic Fabriano Tiziano paper.

I then Framed them in archival boxes, with references to a museum. The wood itself is recycled and taken from an old museum which too was founded around 1915. This is an important process within my work, and again adds to the illusional authenticity of these works.

Daily Routine (2/5)

Content taken from Daily Routine of Patients, silkscreen printed onto canvas. (St.Mary's Mental Asylum Project)

07/05/10

This canvas works alongside two of my very minimal, abstract canvas. It contextualizes the subject matter of my more ambiguous works, and i like the way in which text engages the viewer. There is a photo at the bottom of my blog page showing this work exhibited alongside the 2 canvas': aswell as found objects from the mental asylum, building up an overall narrative between the various mediums aswell as a relationship with the viewer.

I decided to finish it with a gold leaf frame heightening the importance of the documented text.

Light Experimentation with Red Routine Paintings

02/05/10

These paintings (3 out of 5) combine found documents from the Mental Asylum layered by an assemblage of found materials and then layered with Signal Red gloss paint. The individual panels refer to sections of the patients daily routine, through metaphorical textures and materials. Each layer is hidden by the next, referring to distant memories and patient confidentiality. These works act as a link to the past, through the documents , as well as the present, through the found materials and aesthetic qualities.

Throughout the development of these works i began to relate to the subject in terms of this rigid routine. We all to a certain degree abide by some kind of routine.

For my final degree show i plan to have some kind of light source behind each panel, so that the hidden layers are visible to the viewer.

Edited Video Footage from Mental Aslum

27/04/10

This is an edited clip taken from my journey around St Mary's Mental Asylum. The sound is a selcted 4 second section of the dripping water and cracking debris as i walked through the site. I have then overlapped this sound with a small edited section of the footage. This constant repetitive sound has references to the rigid routine that once existed within the asylum, aswell it's potentially maddening effects.

Paintings (St.Mary's Hospital Project)

25/04/10

Brief outline of the role of my paintings inspired by my visits to the Mental Asylum:

My paintings within this project are visual links to the aesthetic presence of the contemporary space, in light of my visits and photographs, focusing on ideals of time and decay. They are a visual links to the now, with hidden links to the past. By combining both references of the past as well as the present, this essence of time and nostalgia is emphasized and the viewer becomes more aware of a sense of change. They will involve all the various strands accumulated throughout the development of my exploration: from the photos, found materials/objects as well as the documents and archive material.

I have contextualized some of these paintings by being placed near, or beneath other collected objects, clock shoes and papers etc. In light of this, narratives are starting to develop within the works, and new relationships and conversations have emerged. By applying the objects outside the canvas and in the exhibition space they engage the viewer more directly, managing them around the space, as well as giving them more of an insight into the subject. The paintings dictate the objects and the objects, in turn, dictate the viewer around the exhibition space; as well as act as a link. So by using the objects in the actual space a hierarchy of dictatorship is created, and a new narrative emerges between the paintings, the objects and the viewer. It is this relationship between various mediums that has interested me more and more throughout the development of the project. And when it comes to organizing the exhibition space it is these conversations and relationships that will dictate the success of my work.

There is a strong sense of nostalgia and time within my research, and through the various mediums I want to project the past and the present, emphasizing the state of change. The printed documents refer to the past, whereas the paintings refer to the present, and by applying certain objects and materials to the paintings they too are linked to the past. So the viewer is not only becomes a guest in the past but also the present.

Collages (St. Mary's Project)

22/04/10

Throughout this project i have translated information, extracted from the archival material on St. Mary's, by creating illustrative collages using found materials from the current site.

They involve metaphorical imagery referring to aspects of the patients daily routine: integrated with assemblages of found materials that take on a new meaning, and in a sense are remembered and resurrected.

References to the past:

The discovery of the Archive material has played a strong role within my research of the Mental Asylum, working alongside the development of my studio practice as well as becoming works in themselves. Therefore by potentially exhibiting them alongside one another it will not only contextualizes the work but also retell an important part of my journey of exploration to the viewer. The archive also plays a strong role in terms of its presence in light of its a priori authority, and authenticity, making it a believable source. I was unable to take the ‘real’ documents, and therefore I decided to duplicate these documents to create illusions of the ‘real’. The reason for doing this is by creating a document, which to the viewer seems to be the ‘real’, it immediately becomes a believable source, taking on a sense of authority and authenticity. By presenting these documents in an archive box or frame they are protected and sealed, increasing their status, immediately implying a new meaning and a stronger sense of importance. The works take on a look of something authoritative.

Presentation of these works is key as it controls the viewer into thinking what is or isn’t real. By presenting this archive material I am making something that is usually invisible to the public visible, and hopefully they are reinvigorated into intriguing, temporary assemblages.

Photographs of Now & Then: St. Mary's (St.Mary's Hospital Project)

20/04/10

Throughout this project, in light of constant visits to the current site aswell as the Archival area at the Discovery Museum, i have taken numerous photographs of St. Mary's Hospital now versus its original state in 1915.

I am currently uncertain how i will integrate these photographs into my final degree show, if at all, but they have inspired my development greatly, especially in reference to my paintings.

Outline of Project for Newcastle Final Degree show. (09/09-05/10) (St.Mary's Hospital Project)

17/04/10

My work for this project involves a number of various mediums, from: photography, painting, collage, printing, film and sound installation, all inspired in part by regular visits to a derelict mental asylum. Within the current site there is a strong sense of nostalgia and human presence, it is as if it was suddenly abandoned and forgotten about, and through my findings and studio practice I hope to some extent bring it back to life. Throughout my research I have become interested in how collective memory drawing from personal and official sources imbue places themselves with meaning. Through documenting and research: collecting information, physical objects and materials an exploration into the site soon emerged. Through these various mediums I hope to visually and mentally construct some kind of instillation that translates my journey of exploration to the viewer, so that in turn, they too experience this journey.
